Social activist Anna Hazare, software czar Azim Premji and four other Indians have been named in the US-based Foreign Policy magazine's list of the top 100 global thinkers for 2011.

Economist Abhijit Banerjee, writer-activist Arundhati Roy, researcher Deepa Narayan and scholar Arvind Subramanian are the other Indians in the list topped by Arab activists who helped bring democracy to the Middle East. US President Barack Obama is ranked 11th on the list.

Nine Indians figured in the 2010 list. The highest spot to an Indian this year went to Premji, ranked at 14, who the magazine called the 'Bill Gates of India'.

'It's not just because of Azim Premji's enormous wealth that he is compared to the American technologist turned philanthropist,' the magazine said about India's third richest citizen with a net worth of $13 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

'It is Premji's unprecedented philanthropy, that recently has borne out the Gates comparison,' it said noting the chairman of the IT firm Wipro, recently contributed nearly $2 billion to a rural education project.

Anna Hazare, who is leading a popular campaign demanding tough new laws to curb corruption, is the next Indian who features on the list, ranked at number 37. He figures for 'asking the world's largest democracy to live up to its billing'.

Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology are developing a camera based on the science similar to the type used in airport body scanners to detect everything from defects in aerospace vehicles or concrete bridges to skin cancer.

The research team, led by Reza Zoughi, of the Missouri S and T, has developed a patented handheld camera that uses millimeter and microwave signals to non-intrusively peek inside materials and structures in real time.

"In the not-so-distant future, the technology may be customized to address many critical inspection needs, including detecting defects in thermal insulating materials that are found in spacecraft heat insulating foam and tiles, space habitat structures, aircraft radomes and composite-strengthened concrete bridge members," said Zoughi.

The technology could help medical professionals detect and monitor a variety of skin conditions in humans, including cancer and burns. It also has the potential to help Homeland Security personnel detect concealed contraband (such as weapons) or reduce the number of passenger pat downs at airports.

The compact system can produce synthetically focused images of objects - at different planes in front of the camera - at speeds of up to 30 images per second.

A laptop computer then collects the signal and displays the image in real-time for review. The entire system, powered by a battery similar to the size used in laptops, can run for several hours.

"Unlike X-rays, microwaves are non-ionizing and may only cause some heating effect. However, the high sensitivity and other characteristics of this camera enables it to operate at a low-power level," said Zoughi.

Currently the camera operates in the transmission mode, meaning objects must pass between a transmitting source and its collector to be reviewed. The team is working on designing and developing a one-sided version of it, which will make it operate in a similar fashion to a video camera.

The biggest surprise at Apple iPad 2 launch event was the fact that Steve Jobs was there to present it. Jobs walked out to a thunderous standing ovation and stated, “We’ve been working on this product for awhile, and I didn’t want to miss it.”

The $499 device is thinner than the iPhone 4, twice as fast as the last tablet, camera-equipped, and ships March 11 in the United States and March 25 in 26 more countries. The surprisingly fast roll-out highlights the fierce competition in the tablet market.

The iPad 2 is very much a video device. The resolution is the same, the price is the same and the battery life is the same. The new feature is a front and back facing camera which was not available on the original iPad.

Apple iPad 2 retains the screen size with 9.7-inch LED-backlit display and the company clearly rubbishes the possibility of any 7-inch tablet. It is said to be 33 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter compared to its iPad1.

The Hottest Gadgets of 2010!

Apple iPad running iBooks

The Stuff team reassessed every new gadget, service, game and app that they used over the past 12 months on these criteria: How well it performs, the value for money it offers, the level to which these gadgets push the technological boundaries in its field and how much users want it.

So read on to get started on everything from the best gaming consoles, cellphones, tablets, laptops to dream machines!

Innovation Of The Year: Xbox Kinect

The wireless controllers of the previous generation of consoles paved the way for the Wii's movement-sensitive Wii Remote, which in turn shed light on the ultimate goal: no controller at all.

Kinect is that dream made reality.

With a camera, a depth sensor, a microphone and a whole lot of clever programming, it quite literally turns you into the controller. Make a bowling action and you may well get a strike; hold your hands as if gripping a wheel and you're in a racing car.

It has the potential to bring gaming even further into the mainstream, transforming pick-up-and-play into no-needto-pick-up-at-all.

To top it all, it lets you control your Xbox's media as if you're in Minority Report, and to issue your console
voice instructions. It's no wonder the Kinect has made it to the top of the list of new tech this year.

Look at a Touch asleep in its box, and it's hard not to be impressed; it's ridiculously thin. And shiny, too, its flawless surfaces picking up fingerprints like an over-eager forensics team.

Then you turn it on, and impressed becomes astounded.

With the same hi-res Retina display as the iPhone 4, video looks amazing. Music sounds amazing. Then there are
the apps: the varied, graphically impressive games that have made the Touch the most successful portable games
machine in the world.

To polish off a superior feature roster, it has a 720p hi-def video camera on the back and another on the front for Wi-Fi video calling, as well as one of the best pocket web surfers in the world. Simply put, if you're going to spend Rs 15k or so on portable entertainment, buying anything else would be pure madness.

Fake money worth Rs 120,000,000,000,000 in India

Even as the government of India speaks of taking preventive measures to curb the menace of fake currency, statistics show there is nearly Rs 12,00,000 crore worth of fake currency still in circulation in India.

While India managed to seal the fake currency's Pakistan and Nepal route into India to a large extent, Inter Services Intelligence-sponsored operatives have furthered their activities by shifting base to Thailand.

These elements have been pumping in fake currency into the Indian market with help of operatives of the Dawood gang who have a strong base in Thailand.
The key player in this racket today is Aftab Bhakti, a D Gang operative who reports directly to Major Ali and Arshad Khan, both top ranking ISI officers.

The D gang's network is very deep-rooted in Thailand and there was already an existing route between this country and Bangladesh through which drugs were being smuggled.

Earlier, all notes were being printed in Pakistan and then transported into India through Nepal. However, the scenario changed post the November 26 attacks on Mumbai, which prompted the ISI to rethink its strategy.
